Our History
Brian and Jo, the hosts of Kimberley Ornamental Stone Craft, moved out to the quarry in 2004 with their two children ( a third was born whilst still living out there). The quarry is one of two working Zebra stone mines in Western Australia, situated in the East Kimberley region. There is a third mine situated just over the border in the Northern Territory.
Brian built a house in the quarry where the family lived a primitive life that involved carting water and had only the use of a generator for power. The children enjoyed the simplicity of life at the quarry, making their own fun together. whilst the quarry was only 50km from town - where the nearest school was, during the wet season the road was so unreliable, so school of the air was the best option for the children.
The Process
The primary production at the quarry was floor slate and bench tops and raw stone that we supplied to local galleries. The work is very hot and extremely labor intensive. The Kimberley slate needs to be split, stacked and transported with the aid dozer.
Our Products
Kimberley Ornamental Stone Craft has been operating for over 15 years, with 11 of those years operating out of our gallery. Our family originally moved out to the mine site where the Zebra stone was mined and built a house to start creating our unique stonework. An opportunity presented itself to move back to Kununurra after 4 years of working in the outback to open up our gallery.
